Q What should I consider when choosing a playground safety surfacing?

A According to the NPPS, you should consider fall protection, accessibility, maintenance and
cost.

Q What are the major types of playground safety surfacing?

A There are two major types of surfacing - Loose Fill and Unitary.
Loose Fill includes Engineered Wood Fiber and Shredded Rubber.
Unitary includes Bonded Rubber, Poured-In-Place, Rubber Tile and Synthetic Turf.

Q What are the major differences between Loose Fill and Unitary surfacing?

A Loose Fill surfacing has a lower initial cost and requires frequent maintenance.
Unitary surfacing has a higher initial cost and requires infrequent maintenance.

Q How much does Unitary surfacing cost?

A The exact cost depends on several factors including the size of the playground, the fall height
of the equipment, the type of material and the type of subsurface. You may pay as little as $5.00
per square foot to over $20.00 per square foot.

Q What is a subsurface and do I need one?

A The subsurface provides a stable base for the playground safety surfacing as is usually made
from concrete, asphalt or compacted aggregate. Most Unitary surfacings are not designed to
withstand the movement of the earth below them and may fail prematurely if there is no
subsurface.

Q Can I install Unitary surfacing myself?

A It is possible that someone trained to install a tile or hardwood floor may be able to
successfully install Rubber Tile, but the finished installation should be inspected by a
professional. Bonded Rubber and Poured-In-Place surfaces require a knowledge of the physical
and chemical properties of the materials, how to properly mix the materials, how to install and
finish the materials and under what environmental conditions the materials can be installed.
Only a professional should attempt to install a Bonded Rubber and Poured-In-Place surface.
